The “Goat” is one of the oldest domesticated animals raised for consumption. It is the most consumed red meat in the world. It has less saturated fat & cholesterol, when compared to other meats such as chicken, beef, pork, fish and lamb.  It is high in protein and low in calories. Goat meat digests much easier than other meats.

“Boer” Meat tends to have a milder & savory taste, more like a veal flavor. “Boer” Goats offer more meat with their larger sized frames and muscle. Tender cuts of meat are the loin, shanks, ribs, legs, and portions of the shoulder cuts.

There are hundreds of thousands of goat meat imported into the United States and in Michigan alone.  The market in Michigan is increasing faster & faster every day.

Michigan’s industry for Meat “Boer” Goats is replacing hog, beef and lamb farms through out the United States, due to its high demand and the low cost of raising them. Most of the current demand is due to the increase in the Ethnics groups, such as Africans, Latin Americans, Asian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern Heritages.

There is a huge “Direct Market” (selling off the farm) with the above Ethnics groups, if they are aware that it is available, they will buy it and they are willing to pay good prices for the higher “Meat” quality that the Boer Goat has to offer.

There are many types of other types of Boer markets. Not only does Michigan have the market for the meat, we have a huge market for the “Boer” Breed Stock. You can raise a herd with good health practices (disease control practices) with fast growing kids (baby goats), educate others on how to raise Boer Goats in Michigan, you will have a market for the breed stock.

There are many other resources out there to help educate you on the facts around the Michigan Boer Industry.

Becoming a member of The MBGA, Inc. (The Michigan Boer Goat Association, Inc) is an excellent way to meet other Michigan Breeders, and provides an opportunity to be involved with our very own Michigan Boer Industry as it grows.

The MBGA, Inc has a Website for our members and others to view, it also allow members and their farms to be listed on it (a great tool for advertising) and a news letter that is mailed out 4 times a year, along with many events, such as meetings that are usually held around the Lansing Michigan area, Fall goat roast with education events, shows and soon to group together for actual sales.

The MBGA, Inc needs your input, opinions and ideas for the Michigan Boer Goat Industry; I encourage you to become a member. Remember that Michigan’s Meat Goat Industry imports hundreds of thousands of goats for consumption each year. We have a market right in front of our eyes and there is no better goat than the “Boer” to full-fill this demanding market.
